CHE FU’S 'BENEATH THE
RADAR' OUT NOW
12 September 05
“My
new album, it’s kind of like if you gave a caveman a
sampler. It’s all about my unconventional approach to
beat-making… if I were to give it a name I’d call it
beat-mess.”
So
says Che Fu on the topic of his third album, the
long-awaited Beneath The Radar, a dynamic and
utterly distinctive platter that masterfully showcases
his innovative approach to hip hop.
“Keep an open mind,”
says Che. |

SUNDAY STAR-TIMES REVIEW
11 September 05
The Sunday-Star Times printed one of the first
reviews of BENEATH THE RADAR on 11 September;
Most of these songs are attempts to more deeply explore
themes that cropped up on The Navigator: the importance
of loyalty; the destructive effects of war and
unfettered capitalism; the use of love to overcome
adversity, the importance of skill and integrity in the
practice of hip-hop and other art forms.
While not all these experiments work, Che Fu can be
commended for stepping outside his comfort zone, and
ours, and trying to attach his messages to progressive
new sounds rather than just delivering The Navigator
Part 2.
"Beat messes" and all, Beneath The Radar reaffirms Che
Fu as one of the most significant and original artists
working in Aotearoa today. And you don't need me to
remind you that this half-Maori, half-Niuean,
Rastafarian inner-city Aucklander has the smokiest, most
sensual voice this side of Al Green, do you?

HERALD FEATURE STORY
10 September 05
The NZ HERALD has a feature story interviewing
Che-Fu as he discusses his new album.
After The
Navigator, and after more than 12 years of making music
non-stop - from high school in the Low Down Dirty Blues
Band, to Supergroove, to Chains, to his solo career -
the time was right to take a break and spend quality
time with his family.
"We just thought it would be time well spent if we
stayed at home, because when the record and tour starts
happening it's going to take me out of the picture [and]
we haven't had this many children until now.
"And with children you do have to be consistent to make
for a stable upbringing. Musicians can't really give
that because I liken our style of work to seasonal work
- sometimes it's full on; you're not going to see me,
and sometimes it's just me on the couch forever."
The break did him good and during this time he listened
to a lot of music.

CHE FU’S HOT NEW SINGLE
2d
18 April 05
2d
(two
dimensional) will be the first single off Che Fu’s
forthcoming new album. The video which was recently shot
at the Maori Television studios and Pt Chevalier Park in
Auckland, will follow hot on its heels.
“2d is about our own kryptonite,
weaknesses as individuals and as a nation, as a group of
people and as part of the greater world… goodness we are
born with, the weaknesses we learn. I guess we only need
to look within to seek that which makes us content”
says Che.
2d is the first single since 2003’s multi platinum,
award winning album ‘Navigator’. Che says the time in
between has been “..a
self imposed exile…there’s also been family time for all
of us…the time off has been great to reflect on the
songs written in 2003”
. Now it’s time to put the musical baby to bed. 2d
is certainly worth the wait. |
